The Yongding Gate was the most important and the largest of the seven gates. In terms of architectural specifications, Yongding Gate, which was located in the middle of southern wall of the Outer City and south of Zhengyang Gate, was also the largest, serving as the southernmost starting point of Beijing’s Central Axis and the southern thoroughfare for access to the capital. The Yongding Gate Tower was first built as a structure with a double-eaved gable-hip roof in the 32nd regnal year (1553) of Emperor Jiajing (1522–1566) in Ming Dynasty, signifying eternal stability.
