Floating Cup Pavilions are a unique building type in China, and the floating cups were used to drink wine. On the third day of the third month on the lunar calendar, people would let wine cups float down a winding stream to someone, who then could drink the wine, which meant getting rid of calamities and bad luck. This developed later into an entertainment activity of drinking and composing poems, and gradually moved from outdoor venues to pavilions with engraved winding water channels, which were then named floating cup pavilions.
